What OSHC Is and Why It’s a Visa Requirement
Australia’s Department of Home Affairs imposes a hard rule on all student visa holders: before your visa can be granted, you must already hold a compliant Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) policy. This obligation is written into visa condition 8501, which means you cannot have a single day without adequate health insurance during your entire stay in Australia on a student visa.
OSHC is designed to cover essential medical and hospital costs while you are in Australia. That typically includes GP visits, some specialist consultations, treatment as a public hospital inpatient, and a capped contribution toward prescription medicines. It is not travel insurance, and it does not cover everything. Routine dental, optometry, physiotherapy and similar services usually require either a paid add-on or out-of-pocket spending.
One point matters above all: OSHC is not a recommendation. It is a legal precondition for the visa. Without valid OSHC, your student visa application will not be approved.
Three Things to Check Before You Buy
Your cover period must span the entire visa duration. When the Department assesses your application, it checks whether the policy dates align with the intended visa grant period. If there is extra time between your course end date and the visa expiry date—for example, an exam period or a graduation ceremony—your insurance needs to extend to the last day of the visa. It is usually sensible to set the policy start date just before you enter Australia, so you are covered the moment you land.
You can only buy from government-approved insurers. Australia’s Department of Health designates a small number of registered insurers to offer OSHC products. The core benefits of all these policies must meet a minimum standard set by the government. Differences between insurers tend to show up in extras, customer service channels and excess settings, but the basic medical coverage is uniform across providers.
Some education providers will buy the policy on your behalf. A number of universities and colleges include the OSHC premium directly on your fee statement when they issue a Confirmation of Enrolment. If your offer documents already show an OSHC charge, the institution is handling the purchase through its partner insurer and you mainly need to verify that the policy details are correct. If your provider does not offer this service, you will need to arrange the cover yourself.
How to Buy: Direct or Through Your Institution
In practice, there are two main paths.
The first is buying directly from an insurer. You can visit the official website of any government-approved OSHC provider, select a student product, enter your personal details, course dates and visa duration, and pay online. You then receive an electronic policy document. The advantage here is full control: you can compare extras and service features across insurers side by side.
The second is buying through your education provider. As mentioned, some institutions process OSHC at the same time they issue your Confirmation of Enrolment. In this case the premium is already part of your fee statement and you do not need to take separate action. Once you arrive in Australia, the institution will help you complete the registration and activation steps.
Whichever route you take, you must end up with a policy confirmation document that shows your name, policy number and the valid coverage dates. This document forms part of your visa application.
What to Do After You Purchase
Paying the premium does not automatically mean your cover is active. After purchase, you normally need to register online with the insurer, activate your personal account, and download your electronic policy certificate and membership card. Some insurers generate the certificate instantly, so you can use it straight away for your visa application.
Once you arrive in Australia, it is wise to save your policy details on your phone or carry a printed copy. When you visit a doctor you will need to show your membership card or policy number; the medical provider then settles the bill with the insurer. If you ever need to switch insurers or cancel a policy mid-term, you must make sure the old and new policies connect without a gap. At no point during your visa validity can you be uninsured. Leaving the country, finishing your course or changing your visa status can all affect your policy’s validity, so check the specific terms with your insurer.
What to Expect on Costs and Comparisons
OSHC premiums vary by insurer, cover length and any optional extras you add. The price difference for the core cover is usually modest; the real variation tends to appear in add-ons such as dental, optical and physiotherapy benefits.
If you want to compare policies, you can use the Australian Government’s official health insurance comparison site or get a live quote directly from each approved insurer’s website. Do not rely on screenshots from third-party agents or outdated price lists—premiums and terms are updated regularly, and only the current information on the insurer’s official site should guide your decision.
One final reality check: OSHC is basic medical cover, not all-inclusive health insurance. Not every medical scenario will be fully reimbursed. Before you seek treatment, understand what your policy covers, what percentage is paid back, and what out-of-pocket rules apply. That small step can save you from unexpected bills.
